When it comes to scoliosis, many medical practitioners recommend surgical procedures to fix the issue, this is not necessarily always the case.  If left untreated, scoliosis can become even more severe.  At Blakely Chiropractic, our goal is to stop the symptom before it begins to get worse and create other bodily issues.  Dr. Blakely has over 30 years experience in scoliois treatment, effectively helping patients heal from this diagnosis.

Chiropractic Facts About Scoliosis

Interesting facts about scoliosis:
Scoliosis is an irregular, sideways curve of the spine that becomes painful over time
Even slight spinal abnormalities can impact a person’s quality of life
The cause of most scoliosis is unknown
Scoliosis usually appears during growth spurts in children and young adults
Scoliosis is progressive and if left untreated will become more severe
For many people who are treated therapeutically, scoliosis does not require surgery
Scoliosis screening is 100 percent safe, quick and easy

What is Scoliosis?

The body's spine has a natural curve that forms an S shape when viewed from the side, and a straight line when viewed from behind.  The scoliosis condition is present when the spine has "side-to-side" curvature when viewed from behind.  Depending on the severity, this curve may be seen to the naked eye but this always isn't the case.  It is very important to see a chiropractic scoliosis specialist who can perform an evaluation and make a diagnosis.

At first, scoliosis won't cause discomfort, but over time the pain will start to become more severe. Signs include abnormal posture, issues when walking and labored breathing.  With today's challenges, a person suffering from scoliosis can develop health issues and social challenges.

In very severe cases, scoliosis may require surgery which will involve attached rods and screws to the spine to help eliminate the debilitating sideways curve.  With that said, tampering with the spine surgically can be very dangers (as with most surgeries).  There can also be a need for additional surgeries.

When is the Best Time to be Screened?

Most individuals develop scoliosis during growth spurts in childhood and in the teenage years. 2-3% of children between the ages of 10-15 are diagnosed with scoliosis.  Females typically develop more severe conditions, the appearance of scoliosi will show up equally in males and famles.  It is very important for growing children to be screened at several points as their bodies mature.

Here are a few of the noticeable signs of scoliosis in children and teens:

Asymmetrical shoulders
Prominent shoulder blade
Rib hump
Visible curve in spine
Asymmetrical hips
Asymmetrical waist

Early detection can prevent scoliosis issues and help the spine get back to proper alignment, allowing the growth to continue its normal course without causing the child or teenager issues.
