What is Sciatica?

It is a name for a medical condition that results from compression of the sciatic nerve.  This sciatic nerve begins in the lower back and travels throughout the backs of the thighs, glues and knees until it reaches your feet.  It works to supply feeling through the legs, which is why when the sciatic nerve is irritated or damaged, the nerve will cause pain and numbness in your lower extremities.  Pinching the sciatic nerve can also cause weakness in your legs, making it difficult to stand up.

Sciatica Symptoms

Usually affecting only one side of your body in your lower extremities, pain will travel down your leg to your feet.  The symptoms can grow intense during sudden movements or if moving positions.  A combination of the following symptoms are most common for sciatic pain.

Constant pain in only one side of the buttock or leg, but rarely on both sides
Pain originating in the low back or buttock and continues along the path of the sciatic nerve
Pain that worsens when standing or sitting
Sharp, searing pain rather than a dull sensation.
Weakness or numbness when moving the leg or foot
Pain and other symptoms in the toes, depending on where the sciatic nerve is affected
Difficulty standing, sitting, or walking
Shooting pains from the buttocks downward through the feet
Tingling and numbness in the buttocks, legs, or feet
Pain or spasms while coughing or sneezing
Lower back pain

Why Chiropractic for Sciatica?

Pain Relief

Chiropractic adjustments can help alleviate the pain associated with sciatica. By manually manipulating the spine, a Blakely Chiropractic can reduce pressure on the sciatic nerve, which will provide immediate relief from discomfort. These adjustments can also help improve the alignment of the spine, addressing any underlying issues contributing to sciatic nerve compression.

Improved Spinal Health

Our chiropractic care focuses on improving spinal health and function. Through gentle adjustments, spinal manipulation, and other techniques, Blakely Chiropractic aim to restore proper alignment and mobility to the spine. By addressing spinal misalignments (subluxations), our chiropractic care can help reduce the likelihood of nerve impingement and inflammation, which are common causes of sciatica.

Non-Invasive Approach

Chiropractic care offers a non-invasive alternative to more aggressive treatments for sciatica, such as surgery or prolonged medication use. Many individuals prefer chiropractic care because it avoids the potential risks and side effects associated with surgery and medications. Additionally, chiropractic treatments involve minimal downtime, allowing our patients to resume their daily activities relatively quickly.
