While it has a pretty intense "medical term", the piriformis muscle is located deep in the buttock region of your body.  It reaches from the pelvis to the upper part of the thigh bone (femur).  The primary function of the piriformis is to provide stability for the thigh and hip through a static or isometric contraction.  When this muscle contracts, there are uncomfortable and sometime painful conditions that come with the piriformis.  Blakely Chiropractic has been treating San Diego patients for over 40 years with issues related to the hip and buttons. If you are struggling with issues of the piriformis or aren't sure if this is the cause, Dr. Blakely can help.

What is a Piriformis Syndrome?

When the muscle contracts it rotates the thigh outwards (external rotation). As with all muscles sitting close to a joint, its main function is to provide stability for the thigh and hip trough a static or isometric contraction. It works in conjunction with several other muscles in the buttock area such as the Quadratus femoris, Obturator internus, Superior- and Inferior gemellus.

It is very difficult to isolate in muscle testing because of it, but its is an easy way to find and palpate if you know how.

A small part of the sciatic nerve goes through the piriformis muscle, and when irritated or damaged can cause further pain to this region.

When this muscle spasms it can cuase symptoms such as pain, numbness, pins and needles and weakness due to the compression of the nerve.  THIS is called "piriformis syndrome".

The Chiropractic Examination

Dr. Blakely's chiropractic approach to diagnosing this syndrome includes a full evaluation of your pelvis and spine along with related musco-skeletal regions.  A functional orthopaedic and neurological examination will also be discussed and performed.

Blakely Chiropractic works hard to analyze and alleviate pains related to pirformis syndrome through gentle chiropractic adjustments and gentle exercise.  For over 4 decades Blakely Chiropractic has been treating San Diego patients with gentle chiropractic care to get pain relief.
