Have you recently woken up in the middle of the night or in the morning and felt neck pain immediately after?  Or is this a chronic condition where you wake up with pains in your neck every time you sleep?  This is actually fairly common.  While you are asleep the body can twist and turn and unfortunately put strain on your neck without you even being aware of it!  This can irritate the nerves and when sleeping in an uncomfortable position for hours on end can really put a strain on the neck. But chiropractic care can help! Our goal is to relieve the pain and allow you to get a full nights rest once again!

In some cases, waking up with a stick neck can cause severe pain limiting your range of motion for the coming day.  While some individuals may feel pressure to maintain the upcomin days activities such as class or work, be very careful that you limit yourself or put any more strain on the region.

How Neck Stiffness Develops During Sleep

Some ways that stiff neck can develop while sleeping include:

Awkward Sleeping Angles

Let's face it, we've all woken up in an awkward sleeping angle with our body's distorted, especially if its been like that for an extended period of time.  This can stress muscles, ligaments and joints beyond their normal limits.

Sudden Movements

You may be in a deep sleep and something startles you in your dream, or rolling over unexpectedly.  These small movements can also cause your neck to sprain or strain.

Preexisting Injury

Some injuries happen when you are awake, such as whiplash or you participate in activities that put a strain on your body.  These may cause issues in your neck that develop or are forced to stiffen while you are sleeping.

For most stiff necks we see from patients after sleeping, is the cause of a neck strain.  Which is most likely caused by a muscle strain or ligament strain.  There could be other conditions such as facet joint osteoarthritis or cervical degenerative disease, but Dr. Blakely can check for those in your visit.

In many cases a stiff neck may start to improve very quickly after applying chiropractic treatments, and in other times it might take a day or 2 for noticeable pain relief.  Most often a pain in the neck is resolved after a weeks time with the proper rest and treatment.
