A rotator cuff is the most common injury or irritation to the shoulder region accounting for about 5 million visits to the doctor each year. These injuries are classifed by the amount of a damage including: partial tear, full thickness tear and ruptures.
When one side of yoru tendon has been frayed, this is often referred to as a "partial tear". A "full thickness tear" is referred to as a complete tear, meaning that there is a hole in your tendon. While a "rupture" is the most severe rotator cuff injury that an individual can sustain and means that the tend has been split in 2 pieces, which will require a minor surgery for repair.
Causes Of Rotator Cuff Injuries
Most rotator cuff injuries are caused by repetitive strains over a long period of time, they are primarily a result of an acute injury such as falling, pushing or lifting. The most common rotator cuff injury is referred to as an "impingement", which means that the area where your rotator tendon lives has become too crowded and the tendon is being pinched each time you raise your arm.
If you perform overhead activities repeatedly you are more susceptible to rotator cuff injuries. There is a higher risk for impingement and tendon problems. Most often associated with sports such as baseball, volleyball, tennis, soccer, weightlifting and archery, it does affect common jobs for contractors such as carpentry, painting, cleaning windows, etc. Other risks that factor in with a rotator cuff injury include smoking, obesity and high-cholesterol.
Getting Over Rotator Cuff Injuries
For younger patients who have suffered an acute rotator cuff tear, it may require surgery, while most others benefit from conservative treatments, like the chiropractic treatments provided by Dr. Blakely.
While sleeping may be difficult, try not to sleep on the irritated side, especially with your arm stretched overhead. Try sleeping on the unaffected side with a pillow between your arm and body.
