So what is sciatica?  Sciatica refers to persistent pain along the sciatic nerve, this nerve runs from the lower back through the buttock, down in to the lower leg.  It is the longest and widest nerve in the body and controls the muscles of the lower leg.  It also provides sensation to legs, soles of the feet and thighs.

Sciatica is a common form of lower back and leg pain, but the true meaning of sciatica is often misunderstood.  It is actually a set of symptoms for what is irritating te nerve root and causing the lower back pain

Individuals ages 30-50 have the most occurence of sciatic pain.  Usually it tends to develop as a result of wear and tear on the structures of the lower spine.  Not as a result of an injury.

What are the symptoms of sciatica?

Patients who suffer from sciatic pain can feel the pain radiating along the sciatic nerve.  from the lower back all the way down one leg, most commonly felt on one side of the body.

Sciatic Pain Might Also Cause:

Mild Tingling
Dull Aches
Burning Sensations
Pins and Needles, most often in the toes and foot
Numbness in the affected area
And most imporantly, a sharp pain or ache in the hell of the foot

Keep in mind, sciatic pain starts slowly then gradually begins to intensify over time.  The pain will also increase and worsen after prolonged sitting, sneezing, coughing, bending, or really any other sudden movements.

How can sciatica be treated?

For most people, sciatica responds very well to conservative care, including chiropractic. Keeping in mind that sciatica is a symptom and not a stand-alone medical condition, treatment plans will often vary depending on the underlying cause of the problem.

Chiropractic can help ease this pain through non-invasive and drug-free treatments.  The ultimatel goal of chiropracic care is to restore the spinal movements, helping to improve function while minimizing pain and inflammation.  Depending on the cause of sciatica, a proper chiropractic plan may cover a few different treatment options such as spinal adjustments, ice and heat therapy, and rehabilitation exercises.

Can sciatica be prevented?

While sciatica is not always possible to prevent, consider these suggestions to help protect your spine:

Maintain a healthy diet and weight
Exercise regularly
Maintain proper posture
Avoid prolonged inactivity or bed rest
If you smoke, seek help to quit
Use good body mechanics when lifting
