How Does Sciatica Develop?

In some cases, what is causing the sciatica is unknown.  However, this is the most common condition for individuals between the ages of 25-50, this is often due to a herniated disc in the spinal column.  The spinal column presses on the nerve root causing the excruciating pain.  It most often occurs when lifting heavy objects, in older individuals it may be caused by bodily changes to the spine.Pregnant women also can develop sciatic pain during the last few months of pregnancy due to postural changes that cause increased pressure on the sciatic nerve.

Other common causes for brief episodes of sciatica are muscle spams and sitting in awkward positions for long periods of time.  Pain will occur when the nerve is irritated, damaged or compressed.  Typically only one leg is affected, and in some very rare cases it can be a result of a tumor on the spinal cord.  It may also be due to ligament laxity in the sacroiliac joint.  This can cause a radiating pain down the side of your leg, as well as numbness.

What are the Symptoms of Sciatica?

The symptoms that come with sciatic pain can vary from person to person.  Some experience a mild tingling sensation and others a pain severe enough to cause you immobility.  And some people experience a sharp pain in one part of the leg or hip with numbness elsewhere.  Sciatic symptoms can grow gradually or even happen suddenly and cause a painful sensation from your buttocks down the side of your leg.

Can Chiropractic Care Help with Sciatic Pain?

While conventional treatment may relieve symptoms of sciatic pain for a short time, they do not work to correct the underlying issues that are causing you to have these pains.  Through gentle chiropractic adjustments to align your spine, you will start to feel your sciatic symptoms subside within 1-2 to sessions.
