The sciatic nerver travels from your lower back down through your glutes and down the sides of each leg.  It is known as the longest and widest nerve in your body, and as some would attest, the most irritating!  The sciatic nerve controls the sensations to the thights legs and odwn to your feet.  So when individuals start ot have pain in these areas, if ignored, can turn in to a bigger issue than expected.

What is Sciatica?

When you have an irritating or nagging pain running down the lower half of your extremeties or a burning sensation after prolonged sitting that can linger for days, are usually the first signs that you are having sciatic nerve irritation.  It could even be a slight tingle in your back that you may have become used to.  In some cases, individuals experience numbness or muscle weakness in the leg or foot.

The distinguishable part that sets sciatica apart from other symptoms is that it typically only affects one side of your body, or rather, one leg.  It is very rare that an individual experiences sciatic pain in both legs at the sae time.  Sciatica starts off slowly then gradually intensifies over time.

What Causes Sciatic Nerve Pain?

Most often, in individuals, sciatica starts to occur between the ages of 30 - 50 yrs of age.  It is usually the result of general wear and tear on your back and body, not from a specific injury.  Usually in the lower spine.

Sciatica is NOT a diagnosis.  It is a name for a set of conditions related to an underlying medical condition.  These "conditions' can cinlude a pinched nerve which is the most common, a herniated disc, or even non-spinal disorders such as pregnancy and diabetes can trigger sciatic flare-ups.

While sciatica isn't always preventable, it is very treatable!  There are some very simple steps you can take to improve your spinal health and protect yourself from future flareups.  Keep your diet and weight in check, exercise, and remember that good body mechanics while sitting at your desk and stretching can play very important roles in preventative health.
