New moms will tell you, breastfeeding can be hard work! But besides that, mothers can suffer from unexpected problems while breastfeeding and it's recommended by Dr. Blakely that you seek an appointment a lactation consultation if you are experiencing issues with breastfeeding. What else is recommended?
Blakely Chiropractic can play an important role for mothers in the breastfeeding relationship with their baby.
Chiropractic for Your Baby
As most of us are aware, the birth process itself can be a very traumatic experience for infants, no matter if you've had a C-section or a natural birth. The trauma from the birth can cause abnormal functioning in the infants spine along with the muscoskeletal system. Torticolis (twisted neck), is a common with birth along with the inability to open the mouth wide enough and tigthness in the jaw due to tongue tie.
Chiropractic adjustments for your infant or toddler can help relax the muscles which allows for the breastfeeding process to occur more naturally. Chiropractors use a VERY gentle adjustment technique for babies by applying a small amount of pressure that is gentle and relaxing for the child.
Chiropractic for the Mother
In other cases, the mothers inability to produce enough milk for the baby could be the source of the issue.
La Leche league international says, “The mother’s milk supply and let down are neurologically controlled. They may respond to chiropractic adjustment, craniosacral technique, or acupressure, as well as the more traditionally utilized herbs and medications. Ergonomics-how the mother holds her own and her baby’s body while breastfeeding-are very important. Pain may influence her let down reflex and, consequently, her milk production.” (1)
There have even been several case studies that showed mothers increasing milk supply after starting chiropractic treatment. (2)
Certainly, experiencing any problem with breastfeeding can be incredibly stressful, which can also affect milk supply. Studies have found that patients, after receiving a chiropractic neck adjustment, had altered brain activity in the parts of the brain responsible for pain processing and stress reactions. They also had significantly reduced cortisol levels, indicating decreased stress. Participants also reported lower pain scores and a better quality of life after treatment.” (3)
The learning curve for the breastfeeding process can be a bit frustrating for mothers and the baby. However, these challenges can be overcome with patience, gentle subluxations for the child to allow optimal functioning for the breastfeeding process.
