How often do you stop and think about your spine? If you are like most people that answer is "zero".  As long as we can carry on our daily tasks we always assume everything is just fine unless you suffer from back pain.  For those who suffer from chronic back pain, it can be extremely difficult getting it off their mind and simply doing day to day tasks.  Back pain is not without cost emotionally and monetarily.

Of coure its just not on our minds to think about our spinal health on a daily basis, but with that said, nearly 85% of the population will be affected by spinal issues at some point in their lifetime.  Personal injury accidents aside, those who run a high risk are heavy lifters and those overweight.  With such a likelihood there is a solid argument in favor of leading a healthy lifestyle in your pursuit of a healthy spine.

Proven Strategies for a Healthy Spine/Back:

Healthy Diet and Exercise

Each individual must know their ideal "body weight" and really aim to maintain within 10 pounds of that weight. Common sense supports the logic that carrying around unnecessary body weight will put stress on the various parts of your frame, including your spine.  Really focus on your "core" as lack of muscle in this region can pull the entire body out of alignment, starting with your lower back.

As we all are aware, you need to really work on eating a healthy diet and reasonaby portioned meals.  When you have a diet and exercise program that works with your schedule, you will see results in both your weight and your overall health.

Remember:  Always stretch before and after your workout. And consult with your physician before you start a diet

Smoking Cessation

When it comes to physical healing, smokers are worse off than non-smokers (of course).  Blood flow can be severely restricted throughout the body by the more than 4000 chemicals in cigarettes.  This restriction will halt the healing process throughout your body, spine included.

Sleeping Habits

Suppor your body as you sleep - Pain at any point is not nomal and if you are feeling pain while you sleep, find a position that will alleviate the pain.  Back sleepers on avg place nearly 50 pounds of additional pressure on the spine which is reduced nearly in half if a pillow is placed under the knees.  (Side sleepers cna reduce pressure on the spine by placing a pillow between the knees).

Like anything in life, there are no guarantees you will avoid back pain, but employing these simple, commonsense strategies certainly increase your chances of leading a pain free, healthy life!
