After an auto accident, many people feel perfectly fine and simply exchange insurance information then go about their day (depending on the extent of the accident). We always hope no one was injured, but even if you feel just fine later in the day you most likely will begin to feel pain in your back, often unberable.
When you understand some of the most common types of back injuries, this can help you understand how serious they are. Here are 4 types of back injuries most commonly felt after an auto accident.
VERTEBRAE FRACTURES
While there are many very small bones in your back, it is still possible that they could break. While some may shatter and others have a clean fracture, when your vertebrae is fractured it can require a lot of medical attention, chiropractic care, and rehabilitation to get back to full body functionality.
HERNIATED DISCS
Within your spine you have little discs, or as we like to call them, little collagen cushions that protect your bones and the spinal nerves from touching. When an individual has been in an auto accident they can become ruptured or slip out of place which will in turn put pressure on the many nerves in the vertebrae. As a result you will experience sever pain, numbness or tingling throughout your body.
BACK SPRAIN OR STRAIN
The muscles, ligaments, and soft tissues in your spinal area can stretch, but if these ar epulled too far apart in the result of an auto accident, can cause a lot of problems. A sprain will occur when damage is done to the ligaments that connect your joints and bones. A strain is when the tendons connecting bone and muscles are stretched too thin. No matter which it is, the healing process and time can be significantly reduced with chiropractic care.
DEGENERATIVE SPINAL DISORDERS
Even if the initial pain is taken care of after an auto accident, permanent damage can flare up months or even years later. As our bodies get older, past auto accident injuries are prone to resurface ad lead to new problems such as sciatica and scoliosis. To prevent future injuries, it is worthwhile to receive chiropractic treatment soon after the accident, even if you are feeling ok.
A rule of thumb we always recommend to individuals that have been in an auto accident is to see a chiropractor, even more important if you have discomfort in your back. Even if you aren't suffering from a lot of pain, a trained chiropractor can mitigate any future injuries and help your body to continue to maintain normal body functions.
