So many of us spend way too much time sitting in front of computers. Whether you are in a cubicle or in front of your computer in your home office, all that time spent sitting can lead to numerous health complications. In fact, research indicates that spending too much time sitting is just as bad for your health as smoking cigarettes. A sedentary lifestyle contributes to decreased flexibility, high blood pressure, low back pain and a myriad of other problems.

While you may not be able to give up your office job in favor of something more active, there are things you can do to minimize the effects of sitting on your body. Check out these tips for taking care of your body and surviving office life.

REMEMBER TO BREATHE

You’re always breathing naturally, but that doesn’t mean you are always doing it correctly. Breathing properly decreases stress and tension while improving immunity, which could help you avoid those pesky office colds.

To breathe properly, sit up straight with your shoulders down and back. Inhale deeply through your nose, and feel your belly expand. Pause for a moment before exhaling through your mouth. Pause, then repeat. Take 30 seconds to focus on your breathing every 15 minutes or so. As you practice breathing properly, it will gradually become second nature.

GET UP AND STRETCH
Poor posture is common when you spend your day hunched over a computer keyboard. Unfortunately, it is traumatic to the body. Even moderately poor posture can decrease organ function and restrict range of motion in the joints. Spending just one to two minutes stretching every 30 minutes helps minimize the effects of poor posture.

GO FOR A WALK
If you work in an office setting, going for walks as frequently as possible is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Take the stairs instead of opting for the elevator. Need to deliver something to someone? Do it yourself instead of having your assistant do the legwork. Park a little further away from the building when you get to work each morning. Go for a walk on your lunch break. Even if you just take a quick walk to the water cooler, getting up and walking as frequently as possible helps minimize the negative impact of sitting on your health.
